Get help for his wild uncontrollable magic or face death. His magic is too strong, too out of control, and his last hope is gone. Now it's euthanasia, starving to death while being sedated.
All this after they forced his magic to channel and. It never does. He heard stories of a mage and the possibility of help, anything is better than slowly dying.
On stumbling feet he seeks his help. What he doesn't realize is Darius needs him just as badly, to heal. Angel Martinez tells a beautiful tale, full of hope and possibilities.
It's okay to work outside the box, to be different, and grow at your own pace. There is no one true way.
The answers both Darius and Toby get and the way they'll build a life together will come at risk but with great reward. Together they have a purpose and the support of friends.
They'll stand for what they believe in. So many parallels to the fight for equality. I can't wait to see what direction the series goes.
Angel Martinez has a very fertile imagination, and in this book she illustrates the literal truth of that. In The Mage on the Hill, it is elements of the natural world around which magic is centered.
The classification of skills makes for a wide range of magical abilities. Our young hero has not been able to be classified by the dominant administrators of the magical of the world--the guilds.
His very life depends on finding and convincing a mage in exile from the guilds whose talent for helping young mages beset by "wild" magic and unable to identify the natural channels for their power once led to disaster.
Will he convince the hermit mage to help him? Can the mage on the hill save him? And what happens if they fall in love? Delicious, fascinating, and a joy to read.
I hope to see more of this world soon. One person found this helpful. This book has great world-building, characterization, and it feels like it was born in a fairy tale and then set loose in the real world and I am so happy with this book.
I have a new comfort read. Toby is joy and life and hope, even as he's despairing, and Darius is wounded and lost but he relearns how to be the best parts of who he once was while helping Toby.
He finds hope and joy again, and they both slide into love as easy as existing. Such a joy. I can't wait for more books in this series.
I went into reading this book with very high expectations based on the reviews I read for it on Goodreads and Amazon. I am thrilled to say that it deserves all that praise and more!
This book sorted reached out of my Kindle, grabbed me by the throat and demanded my full attention. Martinez always tells a great story, but this one was downright riveting.
Her world-building throughout this book was top-notch, so very detailed and diverse. She has populated her world with mages of many arcana with a magic system that I found easy to understand as well and fascinating!
Finally Darius and Toby were just perfection! Absolutely can not wait for book two of this series to be released!!!! I really loved this book a lot!
This book had great world building, character development, and a well-paced plot. The one thing that made it not a 5-star book in my opinion was one of the sex scenes.
I would have rather it had been left out entirely than the way it was written. One of the most annoying things in the universe to me is when characters chat and laugh through an entire sex scene.
It completely ruins them for me. A bit painful at one part in chapter 10,when Toby asks "Copperheads are poisonous, right? As usual, Angel has given us fully developed characters, a tight plot, and a wonderful story.
Toby was somewhat the traditional peppy twink, but his drive to live under a death sentence gave him depth. Darius was well-written, with details like his mode of speech giving him a strong characterization.

First book I have read from this author. I was someone dubious based on some reviews but I thoroughly enjoyed it. One little thing that pinged while I was reading, was that I felt like some of the magical context should have already been known.
As if I should know what some of the terms meant beforehand. Though as I continued to read it was all explained and made sense.
I am hoping there will be more and we can see these characters develop. Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote.
Please try again. Toby has wild magic that is killing him, his only hope is a reclusive ex teacher who gave up teaching 15 years ago when he lost a student.
Darius lost everything 15 years ago and wants nothing to do with the young man who asks for his help before collapsing on his driveway, but fate is a funny thing and when Darius gets to know Toby he realises that maybe he can help with a little help from his friends.
Definitely worth a look. I couldn't put it down. An interesting take on a magic world that doesn't have battles and isn't all about perfect heroes.
This was an intriguing read. The worldbuiding was well done, even if slowly developed sk you had to keep reading to understand whst the Web of Arcana was and how it related.
Really I felt it wasn't until nearly the end that I had a solid grasp on how it worked, and even then there seems to be missing context.
The characters were well developed, and the protagonists likeable. I found myself torn with the antagonists mainly the guild director and professors.
Their actions were despicable and morally wrong, and yet I also got the impression that they just didn't know better, were scared of those with great power and had to do something so went with the age old "sacrifice one to save many" mentality.
Whether this fear was due to them legitimately wanting to protect the greater population, or more to do with threats to their power that they wanted to stamp out is unclear and open ended for future storylines.
The storyline was intriguing and flowed well - I found myself wanting to know what happened next and needing to keep reading, which is always the mark if a good author.
What was missing for me was the connection between Darius and Toby that led to them declaring love to one another and not wanting to be apart.
It didn't seem long enough from when they first met, and seemingly jumped from Darius barely tolerating Toby's presence to love.
I also felt that Darius took Toby on as a student more as an obligation and need for redemption, than any romantic attraction - I didn't even see any chemistry between them.
Perhaps this is because Darius was portrayed as this broken and physically deformed man who hated the world and scowled all the time - it's hard to see chemistry between characters when that is what we're continually told.
Otherwise it was an interesting read and I look forward to more books in the series, which hopefully continues to focus on Toby as we barely saw him grow into his magic and find his Arcana.
It is not so subtly hinted that he has a massive amount of power, but the book ends before we get anything concrete. We'll assume you're ok with this, but you can opt-out if you wish.
